Facing a Penn State team that was averaging 41.6 shots a game overall and 4.22 goals in its last nine games, the Spartans were excellent in all phases of their defensive game on a cold, wintery Friday night at Munn Arena. In 26 previous games, Penn State’s lowest shot total was 27, and the next lowest was also 28. The Nittany Lions came into Friday’s game averaging 3.58 goals a game, fifth-highest in the nation.
