The Wolverines struggled to make good on their chances however, recording 40 shots and only finding the back of the net twice in a 3-2 loss to Penn State. Sophomore Michael Downing called the offensive effort unacceptable, and Michigan coach Red Berenson was disappointed in the lack of efficiency. Defensively, Michigan held the Big Ten’s top scoring team to 28 shots.
