For the first time in program history, the Penn State men’s ice hockey team skated off the ice with a tie.
On Friday night, before a crowd of 6,211 at the Pegula Ice Arena, Penn State and RIT played to a 3-3 tie, then took part in a best-of-three shootout. RIT got the better of the Nittany Lions, 2-0, as both Penn State shooters – forwards Eric Scheid and Curtis Loik – had their shots saved stick side by RIT goalie Jordan Ruby. But the result will still be considered a tie.
The fact that shootout won’t count is “an interesting thing in NCAA hockey with the nonconference games,” Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky said. Players were unaware of the rule, and even after discovering that the game would go into the record books as a tie, they were disappointed with the result.
