Penn State 7, Mercyhurst 5
Late goals from Nikita Pavlychev and Andrew Sturtz saved Penn State Saturday night as the Nittany Lions avoided a sweep at the hands of Mercyhurst, escaping with a 7-5 win.
The Nittany Lions outshot Mercyhurst 57-41. Despite the advantage, PSU was let down, once again, by its goaltending. Peyton Jones allowed five goals on 41 shots. For the season, Jones has an .869 save percentage in nine appearances.
After two periods, PSU led MC, 5-3. The lead wouldn’t hold, however. Goals from Zach Todd and Kane Elliot tied the game for the Lakers.
The deadlock would last only 3 minutes, however.
Sturtz’ goal, which made it 5-3 was the 46th of his career, breaking the young program’s career goal-scoring record.
